Poll: Prop. 123 has strong support as Arizona early voting begins

PHOENIX — A proposition to pump more funding into Arizona schools has strong support as early voting gets underway, a poll showed.

“Early indicators show strong support for Prop. 123 across all demographics,” Mike Noble, managing partner of OH Predictive Insights, the group that conducted the poll, said in a press release.

Predictive Insights asked 665 likely voters how they planned to vote for the proposition and 38.5 percent said they were definitely going to cast a ballot for the measure, while an additional 21.2 percent said they probably would do so.

Of course, the poll found Prop. 123 has some opposition. About 24.4 percent of people said they were planning to vote against it and another 9 percent said they would probably do the same.

Noble said it is impressive that so many people have their mind made up on the issue already.

“It is surprising to see only 6.9 percent of likely voters are undecided, which tells us voters are keenly aware of the measure,” he said. “If you hear someone talking about this next time you are in line at the grocery store, don’t be surprised.”

Arizona voters will decide if Prop. 123 will pass in a May 17 special election. The measure would pump $3.5 billion into K-12 education over the next decade. It would settle a long-running lawsuit stemming from the state’s decision to raid school spending during the Great Recession.

The settlement cash comes from $1.4 billion in general fund money and $2 billion from a state land trust.
