Phoenix police issue warning about text messaging scam

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Police Department issued a warning about a text messaging scam on Monday.

Authorities said the scammers are sending out text messages demanding money for traffic violations that are disguised to look like official messages from the city of Phoenix or the Phoenix Municipal Court.

The texts say a “speed monitoring camera” has captured them going over the speed limit in a school zone and include a link to a fraudulent website where victims can pay a made up fine instead of appearing in court.

What can you do if you think you are the victim of a text messaging scam?

Police urged anyone who receives the message to not visit the website nor make payment and to immediately delete the text.

The Phoenix Municipal Court will never ask for payment via email or text message.
