Police activity closes Interstate 10 at 51st Avenue in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Authorities shut down Interstate 10 at 51st Avenue in Phoenix early Tuesday to talk down someone threatening to jump.

Only the westbound lanes were affected, starting around 4:30 a.m. A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in an email to KTAR News 92.3 FM the office had received reports of someone hanging from the overpass fence near the 59th Avenue exit.

Fire trucks and law enforcement vehicles blocked traffic, which was backed up for miles. Commuters were out of their cars, talking with highway troopers.

DPS said shortly before 7 a.m. the unidentified person had been taken into custody and the road was reopened.
