Pipeline breaks impact Grand Canyon National Park facilities near North Rim

PHOENIX — Multiple pipeline breaks in the inner portion of Grand Canyon National Park have forced the closure of Phantom Ranch Canteen lodge and affected other nearby facilities through Jan. 24.

Three pipes broke last week along the North Kaibab Trail, which is a 14-mile trail that runs from the North Rim to the Colorado River, and the lodge closure went into effect Saturday, according to a park newsletter.

In addition to the closure, water has been temporarily shut off at Phantom Ranch Canteen, as well as at nearby Boat Beach, Bright Angel Campground and the Delta restrooms.

Utility workers are actively excavating the damaged pipe areas and preparing them for welding before water service is restored.

At the South Kaibab Trailhead, a pipe burst after freezing over, and that has caused water service along the Grand Canyon trail to be shut off until it can be repaired.

The park last month began to reopen hotels along the South Rim following the easing of water restrictions along the Transcanyon Waterline.
