Pima County reports first COVID-19 death as state total reaches 3

PHOENIX — Pima County health officials on Monday reported the county’s first death due to coronavirus.

The individual was a woman in her 50s with underlying health conditions, the Pima County Health Department said in a press release.

The death marked the third in Arizona due to COVID-19.

“We express our deepest condolences to this person’s loved ones and family members,” Dr. Bob England, director of the Pima County Health Department, said in the release. “COVID-19 is a dangerous disease that can be fatal and is especially serious for those with underlying health conditions, no matter their age.

“There will be more cases of COVID-19 in Pima County, and there will be more deaths.”

Pima County health officials said there were 25 reported cases of COVID-19 in the county as of Monday evening.

Arizona had its first death due to coronavirus on Friday when state officials announced a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions passed away.

A second death in the state was announced Sunday, this time a man in his 70s with underlying health conditions.

Hospital officials are also warning against home remedies for COVID-19 after a metro Phoenix man died and his wife was hospitalized Monday when they ingested a chemical touted by President Donald Trump as a possible coronavirus treatment.
