PHOENIX – A hiker was hospitalized in “extremely critical condition” after losing consciousness on Piestewa Peak in Phoenix on Friday morning, authorities said.

Rescue crews responded to a call about a medical emergency at the popular recreation area near 24th Street and Lincoln Drive around 11 a.m., according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

They reached the patient, a man in his 50s, about a quarter-mile up the mountain. A bystander was performing CPR on the man, who was unconscious and not breathing.

How did crews get man off Piestewa Peak?

Crews initiated advance life-saving measures and brought the man down the trail using a “big wheel” operation.

An ambulance was waiting at the trailhead to rush the patient to a hospital.

Capt. Todd Keller described his condition as “extremely critical” in a media advisory.

Incredibly easy to fall victim and risk death from exposure to the harsh Arizona elements, all within a 1/2 mile of artificial climate controlled opulence.
Hopefully the gentleman's condition improves.
