Phoenix’s Uptown Plaza gets new owner after $52M sale

PHOENIX – Revitalized shopping center Uptown Plaza in Phoenix has returned to local ownership after selling for nearly $52 million.

The Phoenix Business Journal reported Monday that Levine Investments Limited Partnership, a private real estate company based in the Valley, bought the landmark site from a Florida group.

Bill Levin’s company paid $51.65 million in cash for the center at Central Avenue and Camelback Road.

The shopping center, built in 1955 by developer Del Webb, whose ties to Arizona dated to the late 1920s, has been enjoying renewed popularity after a makeover a few years ago.

Vintage Partners retooled the 128,146-square-foot plaza, the first shopping center outside of downtown Phoenix. The project was completed in 2015.

The redo attracted restaurants including Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, Shake Shack, Flower Child and Huss Brewing Co.

According to Company Histories, Levine owns advertising company Outdoor Systems along with Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno, who lives in the Valley.

The plaza reopened in 2018.

Walter Crutchfield of Vintage Partners said at the time that it was important to retain the historical features of the buildings.

“As a Phoenix native, who grew up shopping at Uptown Plaza, our goal has always been to restore this neighborhood hub back to Del Webb’s original vision in the 1950’s,” Crutchfield said in a release.
