Phoenix Zoo welcomes new adult orangutan from zoo in Nebraska

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Zoo announced Wednesday it has welcomed a new resident as a 16-year-old male Bornean orangutan comes to the Valley from a zoo in Nebraska.

Wgasac is from Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and joins the Phoenix Zoo’s 17-year-old female Bornean orangutan, Rayma, according to a press release.

The zoo said Wgasac arrived in late April.

“He has been spending time getting used to his night house and getting acquainted with his new companion,” the zoo said in the release.

“He has also been slowly getting used to his indoor day rooms and made his way outside today with Rayma for the first time.”

People can usually see the orangutans in their habitat around 9 a.m. each day at the zoo located at 455 N Galvin Parkway, according to the release.

Some might even see Rayma literally showing her new friend the ropes as Wgasac explores his new surroundings, the zoo said.

The zoo is open each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with general admission tickets costing $29.95 for those age 14 and older or $19.95 for children age 3-13.
