Popular Phoenix trail closes until further notice due to safety concerns

PHOENIX — Echo Canyon, a popular Phoenix trail on Camelback Mountain, temporarily closed until further notice on Thursday due to safety concerns caused by the storms that moved through the Valley earlier in the week.

According to Phoenix’s Parks and Recreation Department, the closure is to ensure the public’s safety while the city assesses the damage to the trail and decides what next steps to take.

“The recent storms have caused erosion along the trail that presents safety concerns,” Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department Director Cynthia Aguilar said in a press release. “We know Echo Canyon is one of our most popular hiking destinations, and we appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as our team works to ensure that it is safe to hike the trail again.”

It was recommended for Arizonans still looking to get their nature fix to visit other Phoenix trails, including Piestewa Peak, North Mountain, Dreamy Draw and South Mountain Park and Preserve.

The Phoenix Zoo temporarily closed following Monday’s storm due to damage as well, but it plans to reopen on Friday.
