PHOENIX — High temperatures in the Phoenix area over the next week were forecast to include the year’s first 110-degree day and the last double-digit day for a while, the National Weather Service said.
The 110 thermometer reading was expected for Sunday, which would be about a week earlier than average for that mark to arrive.
After temperatures in the low 100s on Wednesday and Thursday, the mercury was expected to peak in the upper 90s on Friday. It’s the only day over the next week with a high forecast under the century mark.
With the hot, dry conditions and winds gusts expected to reach 30-40 mph, a red flag fire warning was issued for noon to 7 p.m. Thursday for most of northern Arizona.
It had to happen eventually — the first 110 degree day in Phoenix is forecast to occur on Sunday. This is about a week earlier than normal. We may also see our last sub-100 degree day for awhile on Friday! #AZwx pic.twitter.com/cNa2Pfmocp

The weather service has been billing this week as Arizona Heat Awareness Week, devoting a web page to promote heat safety. The information is based on the service’s H.E.A.T. campaign — Hydrate, Environment/Weather, Awareness and Take Action.
