PHOENIX – A 14-year-old boy has died after he was shot last week in west Phoenix when another teen allegedly mishandled a gun, authorities said Monday.

The victim had been hospitalized since last Monday, when he was in a house near Indian School Road and 83rd Avenue with friends who were handling a firearm, police said.

The friends fled before police arrived, but detectives determined that a 16-year-old boy was mishandling the gun when it fired.

The suspect allegedly committed an armed robbery nearby after the shooting. Police said he took a vehicle from a man at gunpoint.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Center for aggravated assault, weapons violations, and armed robbery, police said Tuesday.
