2 dead after 2 related West Valley shootings, including 1 involving Phoenix police

PHOENIX – Two people were killed in a pair of related West Valley shootings on Sunday morning, including one involving Phoenix police, authorities said.

The incident started around 8 a.m. when officers responded to a shooting call near 49th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

A witness directed them to a man who got into a car. The officers tried to stop him but he started driving away, eventually heading west on Thunderbird Road.

Police pursued the man until he parked in the drive-thru of a business at 99th Avenue and Thunderbird Boulevard in Sun City and started walking away, police said.

What happened at second Phoenix shooting site?

“Officers pulled their patrol vehicle behind the man and began giving commands. Then the man retrieved a firearm from his person and pointed it at both officers, resulting in one of the officers firing his duty weapon and the man shooting himself,” Sgt. Mayra Reeson said in a media advisory.

The suspect, identified only as a 28-year-old male, died of his injuries after being taken to a hospital. Police didn’t say whether the fatal gunshots were self-inflicted or from the officer’s weapon.

Police investigating the original call back at 49th Avenue and Thunderbird Road found a 45-year-old man with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both shooting incidents remain under investigation.
