Phoenix PD launches online tracking tool for cases involving sexual assault kits

PHOENIX — Crime victims will now have an easier time keeping track of their sexual assault kits due to a new feature on the Phoenix Police Department’s website.

The department’s updated victim information portal will enable people to check the status of their sexual assault kit results.

“We are using technology to our advantage,” assistant chief of investigations Ed DeCastro said in a Tuesday news release. “The city has leveraged using CommunityConnect to give victims a way to see where their case is in the investigative process. This will really help make sure the survivor has ownership of a piece of them.”

Once a victim registers their case through the portal, they’ll receive a link via text or email that will provide updates on the status of their case and sexual assault kit results.

The victim is able to opt in or out of receiving case alert notifications.

The new web feature will also offer additional resources to help support victims.

The portal launched in August 2024 to provide victims continuous access to information on their cases.

The enhancement of the portal is part of the city of Phoenix’s efforts to raise public awareness of sexual violence.

Last year, the Phoenix PD had a backlog of untested sexual assault kits before outsourcing testing to a forensic lab.

The department wants to implement a statewide program to track the kits, which the Arizona legislature supported.
