PHOENIX — A summer of record breaking temperatures continued Sunday evening for the city of Phoenix.

At 5:52 p.m., the temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport was measured at 115 degrees, besting the previous record for this date set in 1992, according to the National Weather Service.

The record temperature came amid an excessive heat warning in effect for the Phoenix area through Wednesday, where the lowest high temperatures are expected to be 113 degrees.

On Friday, Phoenix set another heat record when the mercury reached 115 degrees for the eighth time in 2020, the most ever in a year, according to the National Weather Service. The temperature would ultimately reach 117 at 4 p.m.

The National Weather Service also reported on Tuesday that it’s been the hottest summer on date, with an average temperature of 96 degrees.

This summer’s average high temperature of 107.9 degrees and average low temperature of 84.2 degrees are also record highs for the city.

And July 2020 went into the record books as the hottest month in Phoenix history, with an average temperature of 99 degrees.

During periods of extreme heat, experts advise people to stay hydrated, limit the amount of time outside, try to stay inside air conditioned buildings and remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors.

People are also advised to watch for warning signs of heat-related illnesses, which can include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea.
