Phoenix officers rescue starving infant after mother’s death

PHOENIX — Phoenix police rescued an infant from a south Phoenix apartment on May 14 several days after its mother died, authorities said Friday.

The infant was “visibly emaciated” when found, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police had arrived to the apartment near Central Avenue and Illini Street at about 10:30 a.m. to find the infant’s mother on the floor and they later learned she had “recently given birth.”

Authorities also said that the surrounding community members had not heard or seen the infant during that time.

The infant was taken to a nearby hospital in “serious condition” but, according to the Phoenix PD, its health has greatly improved.

Besides finding the infant and its mother after forcing entry through the front door, police said one of the apartment’s window was unlocked.

Detectives and the Office of the Medical Examiner are investigating the cause of the mother’s death. The Department of Child Safety is also working on the case.
