Phoenix to receive more than $6 million to replace buses

PHOENIX — The Federal Transit Administration announced that Phoenix will receive $6.4 million of the $366.2 million in grants awarded to improve America’s bus systems.

Phoenix planned to replace part of its fleet of aging buses with the funds. Other cities were awarded money for upgrading facilities, as well as to replace buses.

These new buses are expected cut down on maintenance costs, assist with overcrowding and improve the quality of service.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao made the announcement on Tuesday.

“These grants will help rebuild and modernize bus systems across the country for greater safety,” said Chao.

Phoenix was one of 107 projects across 50 states and territories to be awarded a sum of money for bus or bus facility improvement.

There were 255 applications for the funds with the requests totaling close to $2 billion.

Valley Metro has been the primary bus service offered by the City of Phoenix providing routes of transit throughout the Valley since 1993.
