Phoenix pushes back remaining bulk trash pickup dates for 2022

PHOENIX – Residents of Phoenix should double-check the schedule before dragging out their bulk trash on previously scheduled pickup dates.

The city has adjusted its bulk trash pickup schedule for the remainder of 2022 to account for delays caused by staffing shortages.

“Due to staffing challenges, the City of Phoenix Solid Waste Division is currently experiencing a significant delay with bulk trash collection. The quarterly bulk trash schedule dates have been adjusted to allow the operation to catch up with current demand,” says an alert on the city’s website. (Note: The old schedule turns up in online searches; if the schedule you see doesn’t show highlighted changes for Areas 8-13, it’s no longer valid.)

The Public Works Department’s bulk trash program schedules four pickup weeks a year for each of the city’s 13 collection areas.

The city is still behind on some areas whose pickup dates are already past, leaving unsightly piles of furniture, appliances, toilets and vegetation lining the streets in some neighborhoods.

And five areas that were originally scheduled for October and November pickups now have been pushed back more than a month each.

The original schedule called for the city to have all bulk pickups done for the year by mid-November, but the final area is now set for the week of Dec. 26.

The city has also released its 2023 bulk trash pickup schedule.

“For current customers within Areas 3 through 7, our team is working to collect these areas as soon as possible and are running several days behind schedule. Areas 8 through 13 have been adjusted to reflect the operation’s delayed collection. The changes caused by recent service delays impacts future dates for all areas, which have been adjusted into 2023. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as our team works to collect the city’s residential bulk trash,” the city’s website says.

The issues with bulk trash are unrelated to the new weekly pickup days for trash and recycling that went into effect for much of Phoenix earlier this month.
