Phoenix police won’t charge Mike Bibby after sexual abuse investigation

PHOENIX – Former NBA star Mike Bibby will not face charges related to sexual abuse allegations made by a teacher at the Phoenix high school where he coached basketball, authorities said Thursday.

Sgt. Vince Lewis of the Phoenix Police Department said an investigation did not find probable cause for charges against Bibby, who was fresh off his fourth consecutive state championship at Shadow Mountain High School when the allegations were made public in February.

According to a protective order that was obtained by ABC15, a female teacher filed a formal police report Feb. 12 accusing Bibby of sexual abuse and stalking.

The woman claimed that on Feb. 22, 2017, Bibby, 40, pulled the woman into his SUV and groped her in the school parking lot.

Bibby also allegedly showed up uninvited to the teacher’s classroom at least four times, with the first incident occurring the day after the alleged groping and the most recent in October 2018.

When the police investigation began, the Paradise Valley Unified School District changed Bibby’s volunteer status to ineligible.

Bibby played for Shadow Mountain and went on to lead the University of Arizona to the NCAA championship in 1997.

The point guard left college for the NBA Draft after his sophomore season and was the second overall selection in 1998. He finished his NBA career in 2012.

Bibby began coaching at Shadow Mountain as an assistant in 2013 and was promoted to head coach the next year.
