Phoenix police to ramp up DUI patrol over three-day Christmas weekend

PHOENIX — Drivers should expect to see more police officers on the road during this three-day Christmas weekend.

“Our roadways will be saturated with officers looking for impaired drivers,” said Sgt. Alan Pfohl, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department.

Pfohl said the Phoenix Police Department will partner with other police departments across the Valley to form a DUI task force, which will include officers who are experts at identifying impairment by alcohol and by drugs.

Penalties for a first offense of a standard DUI include up to 10 days in jail, a fine of about $1,500 and an ignition interlock. For a first offense of an extreme DUI, the penalties include 30 days in jail, a fine of at least $2,500 and an ignition interlock.

“It’s just not worth getting caught,” Pfohl said. “Please find a ride home or get a designated driver.”

He also noted there are bars that provide free rides home.

Another option for drivers is Triple-A’s Tipsy Tow, which will provide a free ride home and a car tow of up to 10 miles. The service will be offered starting on 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve until to 6 a.m. on Christmas Day.
