Police release name of woman wounded in shooting involving Phoenix officers

PHOENIX – Authorities on Tuesday released the name of a woman injured in a shooting involving Phoenix Police officers last week.

Valarie Marie Corona, 39, was booked into jail on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and prohibited weapons possession after being released from a hospital.

Authorities said officers had an outstanding warrant for Corona related to a homicide investigation when they located her around 3:50 p.m. on Feb. 5 in the area of 72nd Drive and Merrell Street, just north of Thomas Road.

They surrounded her vehicle to keep her from driving away. A male passenger complied with commands to exit the car, but the woman did not, police said.

After police deployed a less-lethal tool in an attempt to gain compliance, Corona allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at officers. This is when police shot her.

Corona was taken to a hospital in stable condition after receiving treatment at the scene, police said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is handling the investigation into the police shooting.
