Phoenix police fatally shoot man who refused to drop knife

Phoenix police officers responded to a domestic disturbance Friday night that led to a fatal officer-involved shooting, authorities said.

Officers responded around 11 p.m. to a call at a home near 35th Avenue and Greenway Road and met the victim outside, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

While officers were speaking to her, a man exited the house with a knife and began chasing another man who was standing in the driveway.

Officers told the man to drop the knife, but he did not obey commands and continued chasing the other man.

Police then shot the knife-wielding man, authorities said.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive his injuries, police said. He was identified later as 22-year-old Xavier Alexander Aguirre.

No officers were hurt, and there are no outstanding suspects.

An investigation into what happened has been taken over by the Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division.
