Police: Phoenix man stabbed by ‘longtime friend’ at least 70 times before death

PHOENIX — Officials with the Phoenix Police Department have made an arrest in connection to the homicide of a 21-year-old man.

Officers arrested 22-year-old Matthew Meiner on Wednesday in the case of 21-year-old Matthew McLean’s murder.

Police responded to a report of unknown trouble on Monday at a residence in the area of 10th and Taylor streets in Phoenix and found McLean’s body inside of the home.

Detectives said Meiner and McLean were longtime friends and believe Meiner killed McLean using an “edged instrument” during an altercation around Dec. 16.

According to medical documents, McLean was stabbed more than 70 times.

While there is no known motive for the killing, Meiner was known to deal in marijuana and hash oil and documents stated McLean was involved in the sale of drugs as well.

Officers said Meiner was also in possession of McLean’s vehicle, which is still missing. The vehicle is described as a 2008 charcoal-colored Audi hatchback with California license plates.

Meiner was booked for one count of Murder, one count of Theft of Means of Transportation and one count of Possession of Stolen Property.
