Phoenix police officer survives motorcycle crash on I-17

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer was in serious condition after crashing his motorcycle on a Valley freeway early Monday morning.

A Department of Public Safety spokesman said the officer was on duty when he crashed on Interstate 17 near Camelback Road around 2:30 a.m. He was expected to recover.

The officer hit a slick spot on the northbound freeway before losing control of the motorcycle and skidding about 150 feet. The officer was the only one involved.

The time of day probably kept the wreck from involving more vehicles, DPS Trooper Tim Case said.

“Definitely that played into it. Not a lot of northbound traffic at that time. He’s definitely lucky,” Case said.

Phoenix police have not released the name of the injured officer but said he was a 21-year veteran.

The freeway was closed to Indian School Road until 8 a.m.
