Phoenix police officer succumbs to injuries sustained in shooting

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer who was shot by a suspect on Wednesday has died, authorities said.

Officer David Glasser had been on life support since being shot.

Attempting to hold back tears, Police Chief Joe Yahner said at a Thursday news conference that said Glasser’s memory and service “will be honored from this day forward.”

“Tragically, we will begin planning a funeral,” Yahner said.

Mayor Greg Stanton called Glasser’s death a “dark day for the city of Phoenix.”

Glasser was responding to an emergency call near 51st Avenue and Baseline Road when he was shot by a suspect who was sitting in a vehicle in front of a home.

The suspect, identified Thursday night as Israel Santos-Banos, was allegedly stealing guns from his father. He was killed by police.

Yahner said up to six police officers, including Glasser, were involved in the shootout and Santos-Banos, 19, fired first.

Glasser was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix in critical condition, where he was met by Yahner and other officials. He died less than 24 hours after the shooting.

Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Glasser.

Glasser, a Phoenix native, was with the department for 12 years. He had a wife and two children.

Glasser attended Moon Valley High School and Arizona State University before joining the force.

Donations for Glasser’s family can be sent to the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association. Donations are accepted online or can be mailed to PLEA Charities, 1102 W. Adams Street, Phoenix, Arizona, 85007.

When making a donation, indicate the money should be given to the Glasser family.

A barbecue fundraiser will also be held.

The 100 Club, which provides financial assistance to the families of fallen police officers and firefighters, said it would give Glasser’s family $15,000.

Baseline Road was closed between 43rd and 51st avenues while police worked the scene.
