Phoenix police looking for suspects in 2 robberies, one ending in murder

This crime took all of about two seconds.

“It was Sunday, May 5, 2019 at about 3 o’clock in the afternoon,” says Phoenix Police Sgt. Jamie Rothschild, “near Cave Creek Road and Greenway Parkway.”

A guy walked into the Chevron and reached right behind the counter.

“He just helped himself to cigarettes.  He grabbed a couple of packs and tried to walk out,” says Sgt. Rothschild.

The employee confronted the guy but the suspect violently pushed him, making the employee lose his balance and elevating what would have been a shoplifting to the much more serious crime of robbery.

Next, a cold case from March 26, 1979.  Even if you weren’t living here then, you may have heard something that could help police.

Sgt. Rothschild says 44-year-old Robert Clemons was murdered after apparently surprising some burglars at Shane’s Bar near Grand Avenue and Indian School Road.

“We know that he was the manager and the owner of the bar and we’re told that he was in early that day to get some strawberries for breakfast.”

When a worker showed up, he knew something was wrong and called police.

“The scene was described as an obvious burglary that had taken place,” says Sgt. Rothschild.

Clemons’ body was found in a locked cooler. The fire department was able to cut off the lock to get to him. He’d been shot several times.
