Phoenix police investigate shooting that left 2 dead, 1 injured

PHOENIX — Phoenix police arrested a suspect of a shooting that left two people dead, one injured and closed down Bell Road in both directions Saturday morning.

Officers responded to the area near 29th Avenue and Bell Road around 3:15 a.m. after reports of multiple gunshots and found an adult male running from the scene, authorities said.

Three victims were all found at the scene with gunshot wounds. Jerry Carter, 65, and Jessica Velasquez, 45, were pronounced dead on the scene while one adult female was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers chased and detained 20-year-old Jermaine Smith, authorities said.

Smith was engaging with the victims when he produced a handgun and shot all three victims, authorities said. He was booked on several charges including murder.

Bell Road was closed in both directions from 29th Avenue to 31st Avenue fo many hours but has since reopened.

No additional information was made available as the investigation is ongoing.
