Phoenix seeks community input during search for next police chief

PHOENIX — Phoenix is seeking input from residents during the hiring process for the city’s next police chief.

Over two years after bringing in Michael Sullivan as interim police chief, Phoenix is now looking someone to fill the role on a permanent basis.

The city hopes to reveal a list of finalists for the position by March and name an new chief in April.

“This is a pivotal time for our great city and its police department. This will be one of the most significant hires we make as we work to build trust, strengthen accountability and provide the highest level of service to keep our community safe,” City Manager Jeff Barton, who will appoint the next police chief, said in a press release Tuesday.

“I am committed to making sure the public plays a key role in ensuring we hire the right person. Input from our community, officers, elected officials and labor groups will be critical to the selection process.”

How Phoenix residents can be involved in selection process

A survey is now available where residents can share their opinions to candidates on what leadership qualities and priorities a new police chief should have.

In addition, a moderated finalist forum is scheduled March 19 to provide the public with an opportunity submit questions to the candidates online and in person. Residents can attend the event at the City Council chambers or watch it on PHXTV and YouTube.
