Phoenix nonprofit UMOM gets $1.1M grant to help homeless families

PHOENIX — UMOM New Day Centers says a new $1.1 million grant will help them get homeless families off the streets and out of the shelters faster.

“They get into a home, and that stabilizes the family, and gets the children in school,” Darlene Newsom, CEO of the nonprofit Phoenix homeless shelter and services provider, said Thursday.

She says the grant from the Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation will help 75 families over two years in the Rapid Rehousing Program.

Recipients of the aid start with about five months of rent subsidies.

“So it’s important in the housing identification that we identify a unit that they’re going to be able to afford on a long-term basis,” Newsom said.

The program also provides case management and counseling. Newsom boasts a 75 percent success rate with it.
