Phoenix officials detail security plans for NCAA Women’s Final Four

PHOENIX — Six public safety agencies are working together to secure the first NCAA Women’s Final Four ever held in Arizona, officials said Monday. They described a sweeping operation that includes patrolling police officers, paramedics in high-traffic areas and free water stations to guard against the recent record heat.

The national semifinal games are set for 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Friday at Mortgage Matchup Center, with the national championship game tipping off at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Phoenix is ready,” said Jay Parry, CEO of the Phoenix Final Four Local Organizing Committee. “We’re ready to host fans from around the world. We’re ready to celebrate women’s basketball.”

City, county, state, federal and tribal agencies have spent more than 18 months coordinating security plans, Parry said.

Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano said officers will patrol the event footprint in vehicles, on e-bikes and on foot. He urged attendees to report anything suspicious.

“If you see something, say something,” Giordano said at a news conference. “Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

The department has drawn from patrol, specialty and tactical units, investigations, reserves and civilian staff, said Assistant Chief Brian Lee, who leads the Homeland Defense Bureau.

Assignments include security at venues and hotels, traffic control and team escorts beginning at Sky Harbor International Airport.

Phoenix Fire Chief Mike Duran said paramedics will be positioned throughout the downtown event area, with medic carts patrolling high-traffic zones.

Duran said heat-related illness is the biggest medical risk for out-of-town visitors. Free water stations will be available at all outdoor events, and bottled water will be sold at all venues.

“Stay hydrated. Drink water frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty,” Duran said. “Know the early warning signs of heat illness: dizziness, headache, nausea and fatigue.”

The Arizona Diamondbacks also host the Atlanta Braves at Chase Field throughout the championship weekend, with games Friday, Saturday and Sunday that overlap with Final Four events and are expected to add to downtown crowds.
