Phoenix market collecting donations for Mexico earthquake victims

PHOENIX — A Phoenix fish market is collecting donations for the victims of an earthquake that struck Mexico last month, killing nearly 370 people.

“We’re specifically asking for diapers, wipes, stuff for [personal care],” Irayda Flores, the owner of Pescaderia El Puerto De Guaymas.

An empty storefront next to her business will serve as storage.

Flores, who has business contacts in Mexico, said she got involved after an employee was unable to contact his family. Then, a couple of customers called in.

“A couple of customers come in … say they have family in Mexico,” she said. “Most of the customers coming to make donations, they had family in Mexico.”

Flores said that got her started. She’s already sent packed semi-trucks of items such as canned food, soap, pillows and other items.

“The items that are needed in Mexico are things like diapers, toilet paper, toothbrushes and toothpaste,” said Emilio, the director of international development for Chicanos Por La Causa, said.

“People in Mexico that have suffered from the earthquake don’t have anything. They’re living under tarps, they’re afraid to go back into the buildings that they used to live in because they’re falling apart.”

To donate, stop by locations near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road in Phoenix or Broadway Road and Stapley Drive in Mesa.
