Phoenix man bitten by shark during visit to Florida beach

PHOENIX – An Arizona man who was boogie boarding at a Florida beach was bitten on the leg by a shark but was expected to recover, authorities said.

ABC15 reported that William Angell, 49, of Phoenix, suffered lacerations to his right thigh Saturday around 1:30 p.m. Arizona time.

Angell was in the water at New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County, an area which the International Shark Attack File has called the shark bite capital of the world

Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Andrew Ethridge said Angell was treated by paramedics and later drove himself to a hospital for additional treatment.

Lifeguards at New Smyrna Beach didn’t see the shark after the attack.

No other details were available.

In June, a father shooting footage with his drone at that beach captured evidence of a shark swimming near his children and their friends as they played in the ocean.

Initially, Dan Watson thought he was seeing a shadow, then rushed to get the children out of the water.
