Phoenix mall to be home to $100M Nebraska-based health campus

PHOENIX — A Nebraska-based university announced Tuesday that it would open a nearly $100 million health sciences campus at one of Phoenix’s most iconic properties.

Creighton University, a Jesuit university located in Omaha, Nebraska, will build the campus along Central Avenue on the Park Central property. The land is currently a parking lot.

“Creighton University has strong connections to the Arizona medical community, and we look forward to expanding our impact by educating many more exceptionally qualified health care professionals to serve the community moving forward,” Daniel S. Hendrickson, the president of Creighton University, said in a statement.

The 200,000-square-foot building will house nearly 800 health sciences students.

The building will also include a four-year medical school, nursing school, occupational and physical therapy schools, pharmacy school, physician assistant school and emergency medical services program.

Construction on the building was scheduled to begin in spring 2019 and will take approximately two years to complete.

Until the building is complete, Creighton University’s College of Nursing will move into a temporary home at Park Central in January. The School of Medicine will continue to operate its third- and fourth-year programs at the nearby Dignity Health hospital.

Gov. Doug Ducey said in a statement that the university’s expansion “will help to meet our state’s growing need for health care professionals in the coming years.”
