Average Phoenix homeowner will spend over $19K to sell home

PHOENIX — New data showed that Phoenix-area homeowners who wish to sell their house will likely spend almost $20,000 before it’s all said and done.

The data, provided by Zillow and Thumbtack on Tuesday, put Phoenix slightly above the national average of $18,000 for hidden costs of selling homes.

“Even in the hottest housing markets in the country, selling a home takes time and costs money,” said Jeremy Wascksman, chief marketing officer of Zillow.

“If you’re planning to sell this year, try to take some time to research what costs you may be responsible for and how they could affect your profit or even budget for your next house,” he said.

Some of the costs that most will run into while preparing to sell their home include painting, staging, carpet cleaning and lawn care.

“While there could be some initial sticker shock associated with the costs of selling a home, investing in home improvement projects like painting and home staging often probes to be very valuable in the long-run,” said Lucas Puente, a Thumbtack economist.

While Phoenix was relatively close to the national average, some cities strayed far from those numbers.

Cleveland had the nation’s lowest hidden costs at only about $13,000. San Jose was at the top of the list with a cost of $81,500, more than four times the national average.
