PHOENIX — A new housing development for autistic adults is being built in central Phoenix.

Residents at First Place Apartments will be able to choose between several living spaces. — studios or apartments with between one and four bedrooms. The complex — located near Thomas Road and Central Avenue — is within walking distance of light rail, restaurants, bars and other places.

Denise Resnick, First Place Arizona’s founder, said residents won’t be totally alone.

“It includes a suite of support services and amenities,” she said. “It’s not just a place to live – it’s a community in which to live.”

The support services include First Place Transition Academy. The tuition-based program teaches people with autism every day living skills, such as budgeting and interacting with people.

Mike Trailor, head of the Arizona Department of Housing, said he supports the project.

“I think [people with autism] deserve the best chance we can give them – as a society – to live as independently as possible,” he said.

Lindsey Eaton of Phoenix will be one of First Place’s residents. She said she’s excited at the opportunity to live on her own.

“It’s just such an amazing program,” she said. “I look forward to living there … and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.”

The apartments should be completed in 2018.
