Phoenix forum empowers local women with presentations, discussion

PHOENIX — “Empowerment” was the buzzword at a forum for Phoenix women.

“Women coming together, to see one another,” said Janelle Wood, founder of Black Mothers Forum, “and get empowered and inspired by one another’s visions.”

The “Women Empowering Women” gathering was Tuesday at the South Mountain Community College Library.

Attendees celebrated the achievements of female business and civic leaders, heard powerful presentations and participated in a panel discussion on issues facing Phoenix women.

Wood – who was also a panelist – said events like this are crucial for black women.

“We have, for so long, done a lot of things in isolation – and sometimes in competition. What I’ve done is brought us together so that we can develop a bond.”

The event’s keynote speaker was Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams.

She said empowerment is vital for everyone – especially for women – and gatherings like this help people believe it.

“Coming to events like this,” she said,” events where you’re willing to step out of your box a little bit, and willing to stretch a little bit but have it [happen] in a safe place.”

The forum, sponsored by the Phoenix Women’s Commission and the city’s Equal Opportunity Department, also offered information on city services and networking opportunities.

The panel presentation focused on ways women can make a difference.
