Phoenix firefighters get potentially hazardous blaze at commercial building under control

PHOENIX – Phoenix firefighters were called to battle a potentially hazardous blaze at a commercial building near downtown on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Two businesses occupy the building near 13th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, one that stores tires and one that contains lithium-ion golf cart batteries, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

“Hazardous materials crews are using meters to collect readings of the smoke and water runoff,” Capt. Rob McDade said in a media advisory.

How did Phoenix firefighters respond?

Phoenix firefighters arrived at the scene around 8:30 a.m. and took a defensive strategy after confirming that nobody was inside the structure.

Ladder trucks poured water down from above, and large hose lines were used to protect the surrounding area.

The incident was under control as of 10 a.m., with only a few hot spots left to be extinguished, fire officials said.

One person who worked at the building was evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation but refused further treatment.
