Phoenix Fire Department recruitment period open until Feb. 4

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Fire Department has opened its recruitment period and is looking for new firefighters to join its ranks.

Those interested must apply online before Feb. 4 and participate in a written exam on March 5, which is only offered once every two years.

“We don’t even look at it as a job — it’s a career,” Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Rob McDade told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

McDade said the department expects around 2,000 people to apply for the 40-50 spots they have open.

Applicants must have their EMT certification by the week of May 20, he said.

Applicants will also need to pass a physical agility test, which they can schedule and complete at local community colleges.

“We have every walk of life. We have people, 5-foot-10, 165 pounds soaking wet, but they can do the job,” McDade said.

“We look for more of the traits that you bring, not the physical qualities. Men and women of all age groups are who we’re looking for.”

McDade called his time with Phoenix Fire “rewarding” and said many firefighters’ careers last 25 to 30 years.

“Sometimes you have to kick them out of the door when it’s time to retire — that’s how great of a career it is,” he said.
