Phoenix FBI seeks high school students for teen academy program

PHOENIX — The FBI’s Phoenix division is looking for high school students with an interest in the agency to participate in a virtual teen academy starting in June.

Classes will be held every Thursday starting June 17 through July 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and all interested Arizona high school juniors and seniors are invited to apply.

Any student with an interest in the FBI can apply as the program isn’t limited to those interested in criminal justice, according to a press release.

The academy gives students a behind-the-scenes look at the FBI; covering topics like how evidence and hazardous material are collected at crime scenes and hostage crisis negotiation.

Participants will also hear from members of the FBI SWAT team and meet other agents and personnel that protect the people of the U.S. and defend the constitution.

An application, release form and supporting essay covering why the student wants to be part of the program and how the experience will serve their school must be emailed by April 14 for consideration to participate in the competitive program, according to a press release.

Students are evaluated based on GPA, school activities, community involvement and the essay.

Those who make the cut for the program will be notified by May 18.

While the academy is virtual, the FBI offices in Phoenix and Tucson are considering hosting an on-site day where students can see SWAT vehicles and experience a demonstration by the Evidence Response Team.

The in-person day is subject to Centers for Disease Control and Department of Justice guidelines, according to the release.

Career paths offered by the FBI include special agent, accounting, nursing, intelligence and administration, the release stated.
