Phoenix daily heat record streak reaches 17 days but could end soon

PHOENIX — The bad news is the daily heat record streak in Phoenix reached 17 days on Thursday. The good news is the streak could soon come to an end.

The thermometer at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official records, hit 106 degrees at 2:12 p.m. The previous record of 105 degrees was set in 1996.

Phoenix has broken daily heat records 15 times and tied two more since the streak began on Sept. 24.

When will the daily heat record streak in Phoenix end?

Optimists would say the streak will end Friday and although that’s a possibility, it’s likely it will by Tuesday.

Friday’s high is forecast to be 103 degrees. The daily record, set in 1991, is 102 degrees.

High temperatures are forecast to remain about even to daily records through Monday before a discrepancy comes Tuesday.

The high for that day is forecast to be 96 degrees. The record high for the day is 103 degrees, achieved in 1996.

If the streak reaches until Tuesday, it’ll triple the previous record mark and reach 21 days.

An excessive heat warning that spanned a record 14 days and was extended multiple times finally expired two days ago.
