Phoenix, D-backs lead charge to hit the books

PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix and the Arizona Diamondbacks are teaming up on a program called Read On Phoenix that asks parents and kids to read 100,000 books by the end of July.

Not individually but collectively. Arizona Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall said literacy is an issue here — 25 percent of fourth-graders can’t read proficiently. The program’s goal is to have every third-grader reading up to speed.

“Kids not reading well at the third-grade level is an indicator that they won’t go on and be successful in schools,” Hall said.
