Phoenix could get thunderstorms over Fourth of July weekend

PHOENIX — It’s possible fireworks won’t be the only thing lighting up the sky over Phoenix during the Fourth of July weekend.

There’s a 40% chance of thunderstorms on Sunday for the holiday and rain chances are present throughout the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is in the forecast Saturday evening at a 20% chance.

Sunday’s temperature is expected to reach 105 degrees. The mercury is supposed to top out at 105 degrees on Friday and 106 degrees on Saturday.

Wind could also be a factor, with gusts of up to 20 mph possible during the weekend.

Rain, although potentially damaging to fireworks possibilities, would be a welcome sight to the drought-stricken Valley.

Phoenix accumulated .17 inches of rain on June 23, the first time it had been recorded at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in almost two months.

Precipitation hadn’t previously been documented at the airport since .01 inches fell on April 27.

Phoenix is coming off its hottest June in history, recording an average temperature of 95.3 degrees.
