The Phoenix City Council will take up the issue of drone restrictions Wednesday.

It has been nearly a year since Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio announced he was working on a comprehensive drone ordinance. The final draft is now completed and ready to be reviewed by the rest of the council.

“We want to make it incredibly business friendly. We don’t want to make it restrictive to where people can’t do (drone-related) work, but we also want to make sure that individual privacy is protected,” DiCiccio said.

The city council is expected to vote on the ordinance during its regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday. DiCiccio said if passed it will better protect the privacy rights of residents.

“We are going to be putting restrictions on what your neighbor can do by viewing into your backyard and what your government can do when you have an absolute right to privacy,” he said.

The ordinance also focuses on public safety concerns to help prevent incidents with drones and commercial aircrafts.

“There have been 241 instances where drones have interfered with commercial aircraft,” DiCiccio said. “Drone activity is starting to pick up and we want to get ahead of the technology.”
