Phoenix Children’s Hospital gets $250K grant

September is National Cancer Awareness Month. As part of that, a group has given Phoenix Children’s Hospital a grant for $250,000.

Hyundai Hope on Wheels, an effort by Hyundai Motors of America, and 800 Hyundai dealers gave the grant in an effort to raise awareness about childhood cancer.

“Every 36 minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer in the United States,” said Hyundai’s Mike Orange. “Eighty percent of that is curable through treatment.”

Orange added that funding for more research is needed.

Dr. Pooja Hingorani said PCH will use the grant for research into desmoplastic small round-cell tumors.

“Most of the time, this cancer affects teenagers and young adults,” said Hingorani. “By the time it’s diagnosed, it’s usually widespread throughout the body and most of the patients with this cancer die within five years of the diagnosis.”

Hingorani said the work will be a collaborative effort between PCH and researchers at Arizona State University.

“Researchers will be looking at the entire genome of this tumor so that we can eventually come up with treatment options for this cancer,” said Hingorani.

The grant is part of over $10 million that Hyundai Hope on Wheels will donate to 41 pediatric cancer research projects nationwide this month.
