Phoenix breaks daily heat record by hitting 114 degrees

PHOENIX — The Phoenix area broke a daily heat record Friday reaching 114 degrees at Sky Harbor International Airport.

The record was broken just before 3 p.m. when the temperature hit 113, but it continued to climb throughout the day.

The previous record of 112 degrees was set in 1945 and 2019, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday’s temperature also marked the 51st day this year the mercury reached over 110 degrees.

The record comes ahead of the Labor Day weekend, where Phoenix could see one of the hottest holiday weekends on record.

Temperatures are expected to reach 111 degrees on Labor Day, but the record temperature is 112, which was set in 1945.

An excessive heat warning went into effect Friday and will remain in place until 8 p.m. Monday.

During periods of extreme heat, experts advise people to stay hydrated, limit the amount of time outside, try to stay inside air conditioned buildings and remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors.

People are also advised to watch for warning signs of heat-related illnesses, which can include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea.
