Phoenix breaks 70-year-old heat record as warm temperatures expected into weekend

PHOENIX — Warmer than normal temperatures continued in the Valley as Phoenix reached a record high for a third consecutive day on Friday.
Phoenix broke a 70-year-old daily heat record as the temperature reached 83 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for its official reading, on Friday. The previous daily record high of 78 degrees was set in 1954.
The low temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Friday morning was 52 degrees, eight degrees above normal for Dec. 20, according to the NWS.
It was the third straight day a daily heat record was set after Phoenix reached 83 and 80 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
When will Phoenix see temperatures drop?
The Phoenix forecast calls for a high of 78 degrees on Saturday. Sunday’s forecast high is 77, about 10 degrees above normal.
While temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 70’s on Monday, highs will drop starting on Wednesday with the forecast calling for a high of 70 degrees on Christmas.
Phoenix has seen 38 days this year where the high matched or exceeded the previous record.
