PHOENIX — August is Drowning Awareness Month and the YMCA is offering kids in Ahwatukee a great opportunity to learn how to swim.
Activate Ahwatukee, the free, month-long initiative offered by the Ahwatukee YMCA, will offer young children the opportunity to learn how to swim in the comfort of their own backyard, according to Executive Director Sandra Franks.
“We’re doing an initiative through our Ahwatukee YMCA called ‘Activate Ahwatukee,’ where we are trying to teach as many kids in our community how to swim in the month of August,” she said.
Through Sept. 9, the fitness center is offering free swim lessons for kids at apartment complexes throughout Ahwatukee.
“Lots of times, parents lack the finances or the time to get their kids up to a YMCA for swim lessons,” Franks said. “So we’ve tried to break down those barriers and take the swim lessons out to them. The parents can, literally, get home from work, come to their community pool, and their children get one month of free swim lessons.”
Another bonus? Children who are looking to take part in the program do not have to be residents of the apartment complex to get the free lessons.
