Phoenix-area police officer charged with second-degree murder of suspect

PHOENIX — A Phoenix-area police officer has been charged with the January murder of a suspect, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said Friday.
The county attorney said Mesa Police Officer Philip Mitchell Brailsford was charged with second-degree murder after killing a suspect on Jan. 18.
Brailsford, along with other officers, responded to a call of a suspect pointing a rifle out of a room window at the La Quinta Inn and Suites near Superstition Springs Boulevard and the US 60.
Officers surrounded the room’s door and ordered two suspects — a male and a female — to come out of the room on their hands and knees. When officers ordered the female to crawl toward them, she complied and was arrested.
However, when the male suspect, identified as Daniel Shaver, was ordered to crawl to officers, he allegedly made a slight movement toward his waistline. Brailsford then allegedly opened fire, hitting Shaver five times, killing him.
“After carefully reviewing the relevant facts and circumstances, we have determined that the use of deadly physical force was not justified in this instance,” Maricopa County Bill Montgomery said in a release.
In a separate release, the Mesa Police Department said it will fully cooperate with the county attorney’s office in the investigation.

Totally changed my perspective of the situation by reading the gofundme
Poorly trained and unqualified public servant destroys the life of an innocent civilian and his family by their failure to use their brain and critical thinking skills. This failed cop should be an example to all LEO that bad decisions come with consequences. No winners here. No criminal element removed from our streets, rather, another poorly trained cop is identified and removed from the threat to public safety.
The story suggests someone was sighting through the scope, which was attached to the pellet rifle. Gun lovers in this state love being seen with their side arms or rifles over their shoulders. That kind of display is not illegal, but you suggest it should be a cause for concern? Do you not understand the hypocrisy in that position?
This guy was not a risk to anyone, ever!! This cop has been trained to react, not think. His training failed everyone and cost an innocent man his life because of it. Your comments prove that more needs to be done to insure that LEO's conduct their jobs in a way that is a benefit to society and not a risk to an innocent public. Try to be more supportive. That could have been your family member murdered in that hallway.
