Phoenix area impacted with rain, wind, hail on Thursday

PHOENIX — If you were shocked by the weather in the Phoenix area on Thursday, you were not alone.

A severe thunderstorm moved through the area late Thursday afternoon, bringing rain, wind and even hail.

Parts of Carefree experienced hail earlier that day.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the Phoenix area until 6:15 p.m. on Thursday.

The areas that were expected to be impacted included Phoenix, Avondale and Goodyear.

Many residents across the Valley also saw rain.

A severe thunderstorm that was nearly stationary, according to the weather service, was located seven miles southeast of Phoenix International Raceway just before 6 p.m.

According to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, many parts of the Valley saw anywhere from half an inch to over an inch of rain.

Perry Park in Phoenix recorded 1.46 inches of rain, while a Phoenix basin recorded 1.7 inches. Chandler Boulevard and Arizona Avenue recorded more than 1.2 inches of rain.

A flash flood warning was also issued for part of Maricopa County until 9 p.m.

The areas that were expected to see flooding included Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Tolleson and Laveen.

Drivers were encouraged to stay off the roads, move to higher ground and “act quickly to protect your life.”

Thousands of residents were impacted by power outages, according to the APS and SRP outage maps.
