PHOENIX – A Phoenix-area high school student was hailed as a hero this week after he likely saved the life of a woman in the throes of a medical emergency.

Diego Garcia, 17, was recognized Tuesday by Glendale city leaders for his quick thinking recently when he jumped a school fence to help Danet Garcia, a diabetic who had passed out.

Danet, a social worker at Glendale High School, said at the ceremony she didn’t think she would have survived without his help.

Diego was walking by the school Nov. 2 when he heard noises, investigated and found her.

Danet had dangerously low blood sugar that evening and had fallen facedown on the ground behind a locked fence.

Diego, a school senior, called 911, hurdled the gate and unlocked it. That allowed first responders to reach Danet unimpeded.

The teen was presented with a mayoral proclamation and a life safety certificate signed by the chiefs of Glendale’s police and fire departments.

We want to hear from you.
