Phoenix-area educator invited to White House History Teacher Institute

PHOENIX — A Valley teacher is headed to the nation’s capital.

Michael Gonzalez from the Glendale Preparatory Academy in Peoria has been invited to attend the fourth annual White House History Teacher Institute in Washington, D.C.

The weeklong trip held by the White House Historical Association in July includes a private tour of the White House as well as meeting and hearing from former White House staff.

The institute, which sits just about a block from the White House at the David M. Rubenstein Center for White House History, also gives educators the chance to use and provide feedback on classroom tools created by the association.

A total of 60 teachers ranging from elementary school to high school were selected from more than 30 states, Washington, D.C., and France.

Splitting into two groups of 30, the teachers will spend five eight-hour days learning the role of the White House and other details of the nation’s history to help enhance their curriculum in their respective classrooms.

“The Association’s education department seeks to create materials that can easily mix, match, and integrate into many different classroom environments,” Whitney Hayne, director of education, said in a press release.

“By exploring the stories of the White House and our resources during the Teacher Institute, participants gain a unique lens that can freshen up their existing curriculum and engage their students in new ways.”
